Free subtitle tools: convert, repair and sync

Start with the caption file you already have. These tools work with text and timestamps; they do not transcribe audio or generate captions from a video.

A useful order of work

  1. Check the file

If an editor rejects your subtitles, validate the structure first. Review each warning before accepting a repair, especially overlapping or reversed timestamps.

  2. Choose the output

Use SRT for a workflow that requests SubRip captions, VTT for a WebVTT workflow, or plain text for a transcript. Conversion can discard formatting that the other format cannot represent.

  3. Check timing and readability

Apply a constant offset when every cue is early or late. Check reading speed, then preview the result with the actual video before publishing.
