How to use the utm builder

Build a destination URL with consistent Google Analytics campaign parameters while preserving query parameters already present on the page URL.

Give source, medium, and campaign stable meanings

Use source for the referrer or publisher, medium for the channel type, and campaign for the shared initiative. Document a controlled vocabulary so video_description and description are not treated as different media accidentally.

Lowercase values and one separator style make filters and exports easier to maintain. The exact vocabulary matters less than using it consistently.

Test the entire redirect path

Open the completed URL and confirm that affiliate systems, shorteners, redirects, consent tools, and the landing page preserve the campaign parameters. A correct builder output cannot prevent a later redirect from dropping them.

Common questions

Questions about this tool

Which UTM parameters should I use?

Google strongly recommends relevant campaign parameters, especially utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign, with optional fields when they serve a defined reporting need.

Will existing query parameters be removed?

No. The builder uses the browser URL API and preserves existing parameters while setting the campaign values.

Do UTM parameters affect the page content?

They normally support analytics attribution, but the destination site or redirect service can choose to read, change, or remove them.
