Export problems usually begin before the export. A destination implies an aspect ratio and resolution. Those choices shape bitrate, encoded file size, storage, and the time required to move the file. Treating each question in isolation makes deadlines brittle.

This workflow starts with the delivery surface and moves outward to the production resources it consumes. The estimates are planning checks: the final encoder, source complexity, network conditions, and platform processing can still change the result.

Make one decision, then carry it forward

Each stage names the evidence to collect, the decision to record, and the tool that makes the next calculation inspectable.

  1. Lock the delivery canvas

    Choose the primary destination, orientation, and aspect ratio. Confirm whether the same edit must survive a landscape, square, portrait, or vertical crop before important text and faces are positioned.

  2. Write the export brief

    Match frame rate to the source when possible, choose the delivery resolution, then set a practical codec, bitrate, audio, color, and web-optimization target.

  3. Estimate the delivery file

    Use total bitrate and duration to estimate the encoded master before waiting for a render. The result helps check transfer limits, client portals, portable storage, and publishing time.

    Use the expected average total bitrate, include audio, and note whether the encoder uses constant or variable bitrate. Keep a tolerance for container and metadata overhead.

  4. Reserve production storage

    A compact delivery master does not describe the source media. Camera bitrates, recording duration, simultaneous sources, and repeated sessions determine the working storage requirement.

    Record bitrate per source, planned hours, number of cameras or recorders, and number of sessions. Add separate capacity for proxies, cache, project files, exports, and backups.

  5. Schedule the upload window

    Use the final file estimate and a measured upload result—not the provider’s advertised download speed—to calculate the transfer window. Then add platform processing and verification time.

    Record file size, measured upload Mbps, the calculator estimate, the publishing deadline, and a separate buffer for retries and platform processing.

Worked scenario: a ten-minute 1080p upload

Assume a ten-minute landscape video is delivered at 1920 × 1080, 30 fps, and an average total bitrate of 12 Mbps. The shoot records two 50 Mbps cameras for two hours, and the measured upload speed is 20 Mbps.

Read the output in context

The schedule should reserve more than seven minutes. Transfer is only one dependency; the platform still needs to process the file, and a failed verification or unstable connection can require another attempt.
