Formula or method

Aspect ratio = width ÷ greatest common divisor : height ÷ greatest common divisor

Assumptions

  • Pixel aspect ratio is assumed to be square.
  • The simplified ratio does not change the source dimensions.

How to use the aspect ratio

Use this calculator to reduce width and height to a clean aspect ratio, then scale that ratio to a new canvas without stretching the picture. It is useful for checking source footage, planning a crop, and translating layouts between long-form and vertical video.

Separate aspect ratio from resolution

Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame, while resolution describes its pixel dimensions. A 1920 by 1080 export and a 1280 by 720 export are both 16:9, but they do not contain the same number of pixels.

Use the reduced ratio to choose a layout, then select dimensions that suit the destination and source quality. Increasing the numbers alone cannot restore detail that was not captured.

Preview the crop before adapting a video

Moving from 16:9 landscape to 9:16 vertical removes much of the original width when the frame is filled. Check whether faces, demonstrations, captions, and other essential elements remain inside the crop instead of relying on an automatic center cut.

YouTube can display several aspect ratios, and eligible square or vertical uploads may be categorized as Shorts. A 1080 by 1920, 9:16 canvas remains a practical full-screen vertical working format, not a promise that every source will crop cleanly into it.

Common questions

Questions about this tool

What is the difference between aspect ratio and resolution?

Aspect ratio is the proportional shape of the frame. Resolution is the exact width and height in pixels. Many resolutions can share the same aspect ratio.

What aspect ratio should I use for YouTube Shorts?

A 9:16 vertical canvas is the practical full-screen choice for Shorts. YouTube also recognizes eligible square or vertical uploads, but they use the display differently.

Can I convert a 16:9 video to 9:16 without cropping?

Not while also filling the vertical frame. You must crop the sides, add padding or a designed background, or recompose the source into a vertical layout.
